How the O Canada Score Works

Every vehicle gets two numbers: the O Canada Score (out of 100) and the Canadian Footprint Score (out of 90). Both are calculated from publicly available data. Neither can be bought, negotiated, or influenced by manufacturer partnerships.

The O Canada Score (0-100)

This score measures how much economic activity a vehicle purchase supports across Canada and the integrated North American manufacturing region. It's built from four categories.

Final Assembly Location: 50 points

Where a vehicle is physically assembled is the single strongest indicator of direct employment and economic activity. It's also the only data point we can verify with complete certainty by country, using VIN data.

Why USA and Mexico score equally: Both are full CUSMA partners operating under the same trade agreement as Canada. A vehicle assembled in San Antonio and one assembled in Nuevo Laredo both support North American manufacturing corridors and CUSMA supply chains. Treating them differently would imply a trade judgment this platform doesn't make. Canada scores highest because it directly supports Canadian workers. Everything within CUSMA scores equally. Everything outside CUSMA scores zero.

We set final assembly at 50 points, not 70 or 80, because a vehicle built outside Canada but with high North American parts content still creates real economic benefit across the continent. This score is pro-Canadian, not absolutist.

North American Content: 30 points

The American Automobile Labeling Act (AALA) requires manufacturers to report the percentage of parts sourced from North America on every window sticker. Most vehicles range from 62-85% North American content. Points are allocated proportionally: 62% NAC earns 19 points; 85% NAC earns the full 30.

An important limitation: AALA reports US and Canadian parts content as a single combined figure. There is no publicly available source that separates them. Cars.com's American-Made Index acknowledges the same problem. Rather than obscure this, we label this category "North American Content" explicitly. We never claim to measure something we cannot measure. If measuring Canadian-only content is your priority, use the Canadian Footprint Score instead.

Engine manufacturing requires precision machining, skilled labour, and specialized supply chains. Canadian engine plants are rare, which makes Canadian-built engines genuinely distinctive. The 10-point ceiling reflects importance without overstating it.

Transmissions are high-value precision components. Canada has real transmission manufacturing capacity through companies like Magna and Linamar. This category rewards that.


The Canadian Footprint Score (0-90)

This is a second, parallel metric displayed on every vehicle page alongside the O Canada Score. Where the O Canada Score measures CUSMA-region integration, the Canadian Footprint Score measures Canadian-only content.

The maximum is 90, not 100, because true Canadian-only content across all categories is rare. A score of 90 would mean Canadian assembly, Canadian-built engine and transmission, and high Canadian parts content—essentially a small number of vehicles.

Both scores are displayed side-by-side because they answer different questions. The O Canada Score answers: "How integrated is this vehicle with North American manufacturing?" The Canadian Footprint Score answers: "How much of this vehicle is specifically Canadian?"

Example: The Toyota RAV4 (assembled in Cambridge, Ontario) scores 77 on the O Canada Score and around 60 on the Canadian Footprint Score. The Toyota Tacoma (assembled in Mexico) scores 51 and near 0 respectively. The RAV4's higher O Canada Score comes from Canadian assembly. Both the Footprint and the O Canada Score together tell you more than either number alone.


Data Sources

All scores are calculated from publicly available data and served from an internally maintained database. No score is generated by a live API call, which means the platform stays functional regardless of any disruption to external data services.

Anyone can cross-check these scores against the source documents. The methodology is versioned. If we update it, we publish the change and recalculate historical scores so comparisons stay valid.

Trade Context — September 2026

What changed: Canada-US trade talks collapsed August 21, 2026. US tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts, and steel rise to 50% on January 1, 2027. Canada has countered with 15–50% tariffs on a broad range of US goods. Critically, these tariffs now apply even to CUSMA-compliant goods on both sides. CUSMA compliance previously shielded trade from tariffs; it functionally no longer does.

What this means for the O Canada Score

The O Canada Score measures manufacturing origin — where a vehicle was assembled and where its parts came from. It does not measure tariff exposure, political risk, or trade policy. Those change. Manufacturing origin, for any given model year, does not.

We are not adding a "tariff score." Doing so would require live policy tracking, which contradicts the static-database architecture that keeps this platform functional when external data sources go down. A score that has to be rebuilt every time a policy shifts is not a reliable tool.

What the current trade situation does reinforce: Canadian-assembled vehicles have never mattered more. A vehicle built in Oshawa or Cambridge creates Canadian jobs whether tariffs are 0% or 50%. The score reflects that directly.
